So I just went through a huge brainstorm of thing and let myself run wild without stopping myself to think "Probably can't be done in just a hotfix". But some of this stuff might be awesome, some might not be so and with that I figured I'd post to General before coming up with a better structured idea/format in Features and Ideas.
To begin with, people are talking about Projectile weapon profile. It's "off" with -5% shields +10% armor.
However in EVE, autocannons and artillery weapons (projectile weapons that is the main source of Minmatar damage) have ammo types that can change the damage type it does, from EMP to Thermic to Kinetic to Explosive.
How would something like that be implemented? Through the reload button.
Idea 1: Hold down the reload button to bring up a radial menu. It can be switched by pressing the L1 (aiming) button to cycle through "ammo" choices. For now, they would switch the current weapon's profile.
Idea 2: Hold down the reload button to bring up a radial menu. Choices would be selected using the Left Stick (I was trying for Right like we already do for Equipment/Squad Orders, but holding square means you can't do it). This might be more beneficial than the first idea, since you can immediately switch to the exact preferred "ammo" of choice. The drawback however is temporary movement stop while selecting.
After either idea, to keep things simple, the weapon's ammo would be depleted to 0 (but no ammo is lost, it would just go into reserve) and it will force you to reload your weapon upon selection of a new "ammo" (weapon profile).
And then it got me thinking, missiles have the potential to change damage types too in EVE. So why not give different damage types to missiles too?
This could bring back Swarms.
Instead of different damage types (for now), Swarm Launcher users could change from Anti-Vehicle to Anti-Infantry. Or maybe from Lock-on Type to Free Fire Type? (Or maybe that's what the Assault variant would do!)
Well anyways, I'm going all over the place. Before I do, let me list them.
Idea 1: Swarms, Missile Installations, and Missile Turret (both small and large) would be able to switch to different ammo types. However, I forsee this making Missile Turrets extremely powerful and careful consideration needs to be made.
Idea 2: Swarms have the ability to switch to Anti-Vehicle to Anti-Infantry. This would allow them to switch their ammo and change target profiles to allow them target different enemies. But this doesn't explain why they would have to switch ammo for this. On top of that going from a Lock-On mode to a Free Fire mode isn't really an ammo thing, it would be more of a weapon thing. Which brings me to...
Idea 3: Implement Swarm Missiles with different damage profiles AND make the Assault variant the Free Fire mode. Basically, the Free Fire would be able to launch missiles instantly in the direction they are aimed at. They are given a splash damage boost, missile acceleration and speed are greatly increased (but remember, they don't track), and possbily given to damage profiles: one against Infantry (as to not one shot them, Codex players know what I'm talking about) and one against Vehicles.
I'm still tweaking Idea 3 in my mind, I really would like feedback on that.
And off that long tangent and back to the other weapons... a change like this would make projectile weapons all of a sudden really powerful. So what about the other weapon classes?
Well for EVE, most other ammo types and crystal types (lasers) change the weapon's optimal range. So why not have them do that?
Laser weapons: Hold down the reload button to select your range (for simplicity it would be Short and Long, or possible Short, Mid and Long Ranges). The weapon would change the crystal and a reload isn't needed. (This is only in homage to the fact that switching out a crystal in EVE for laser weapons doesn't need to wait for a reload.) Depending on how powerful the ability to switch on a Laser Type weapon is can be up for discussion.
Hybrid-Blaster weapons: Similarly, range. Short and Long, or Short, Mid and Long.
Hybrid-Railgun weapons: See above.
A final note: Under these conditions, projectile weapons would seem to be the weapon that can and does everything. My intention is that it CAN switch to different profiles, but IS NOT as efficient as other weapons.
For example, the EMP-Projectile profile would be +15/-15. Laser-Types are still better.
Hybrid-Blaster-Projectile profile would be +5/-5. Hybrid-Blaster weapons are still better.
Hybrid-Railgun-Projectile profile would be -5/+5. Hybrid-Railgun weapons are still better (and would still keep their range!).
Hybrid-Explosive-Projectile profile would be -15/+15. Explosive weapons are still better.
So here it all is, my brainstorm on ammo types. Should I focus more on one thing? Probably. Does it need to be cleaned up? Yes. Is it something I would like to see in Legion? Yes. Should I break this idea up into different part? Possibly.
Anyways, what do you guys think?
